ICPConcerned: Global Images for Global Crisis

My image was chosen from over 10,000 to be seen in this important exhibit during the height of the Covid 19 pandemic.

This image was taken on June 16, 2020 at Kirk Park Beach in Montauk, NY.

After three months of isolation alone in my small NYC apartment, I put on my safest mask and headed out east on the Hampton Jitney to Southampton to retrieve my car. The car had been parked there for years and I realized I was going to need it during Covid.

The minute I opened the car door and sat down, I ripped my tight mask off and I could finally breathe physically and emotionally.

While I was driving the car to the beach in Montauk for a respite from the city, it felt familiar. It started to feel like Covid never happened.

On the beach most people were not wearing masks. After a long walk I sat down when I saw these two woman in black masks walking in my direction. The reality and anxiety of Covid returned. I reached for my camera and clicked the shutter!

"Drapacz trained with Richard Avedon, who taught her to wait for that moment 'that makes [her] heart beat faster.' Those 'heartbeat' moments are clearly visible in her portraits and adorable sibling shots."
